There’s a certain quiet comfort to something that is beautifully made.
Perhaps it’s because baskets have always felt so inherently part of the home. Long before our storage was anything other than hidden behind cupboard doors and in utility rooms, woven baskets held pride of place in everyday life-carrying washing or blankets, collecting food or simply resting in the corner of a room and adding texture and warmth.
At Indu House, we’ve always valued items that offer usefulness alongside beauty, and our handmade laundry baskets fit this philosophy perfectly. They are useful items of course, but they’re also deeply rooted in craftsmanship, material, and a slower method of production.
Each and every one of our baskets starts not in a factory, but with skilled makers within communities of artisans in Indonesia.
The method is profoundly physical and instinctive. The natural rattan reeds used to weave our baskets are prepared and sorted before the weaving begins. Each individual reed will behave a little differently-depending on its thickness, suppleness and its exact tone. Unlike artificial alternatives that are manufactured to be completely uniform, the raw natural rattan begins with inherent variation. Some reeds are naturally more supple, some a little more rigid, some a warmer shade of honey than others; variation that will later make up part of the finished basket's unique charm.
This slight unpredictability is just part of what makes handmade weaving such a skilled practice.
A weaver works more with their hands, touch and their sense of rhythm, shaping the structure manually as it grows. The weave tightens and relaxes with instinctive movements practiced and perfected over many years. Handles are carefully crafted and formed in such a way that they are both robust and comfortable to carry, and lids need to rest lightly upon their baskets.
A machine could never replicate the subtle nuances of this process, because handmade weaving requires judgment at every stage.
Perhaps it’s for this reason why handmade baskets feel quite different emotionally from something mass produced.
There’s a warmth in the weave itself. Small irregularities add softness rather than sterile perfection. Light will always hit the natural fibres in a different way during the day and the rattan itself will mature, gradually deepening into warmer honey hues over the years as it integrates into the life and atmosphere of your home.
We love the way our baskets age, and develop over time. The everyday baskets used regularly by the washing machine, in a bathroom or at the foot of the bed, are steadily woven into the rhythm of a busy home.
We never intended for our laundry baskets to feel purely functional. The best household items are often those that add subtly to the feeling and atmosphere of a room without sacrificing their practical purpose. A large woven basket softens the cool expanse of stone and tile in a bathroom; its texture brings depth to the corner of a bedroom or warmth to a plain utility space.
Natural materials are particularly adept at achieving this effect.
Rattan introduces a tactile element, yet without heaviness. Its tones complement perfectly with other natural materials such as wood, linen, stone and earthy interiors; after all, rattan already belongs in these environments naturally. Even when not being actively used to carry items, a handmade basket has a certain presence that makes any space feel more grounded.
Because every single basket is handwoven, no two items are exactly alike. Slight variations in the tightness and the consistency of the weave, and even in the shade of the rattan, are all part of the charm of the handmade object. These are the quirks that give the basket its soul, and remind us of the real hands that crafted the item slowly and with care.
This much slower method of creation lies at the heart of what we do at Indu House. We have no desire to churn out goods as quickly or as uniformly as possible. Instead, we work in close partnership with skilled artisans, those whose craftsmanship has been honed over many generations of traditional weaving, keeping the ancient techniques alive and relevant.
In a world increasingly dominated by machines and efficiency, there's something truly comforting about owning an item that bears the unmistakable mark of the human hand.
This is, we think, why woven baskets continue to endure. They connect the most fundamental forms of functionality with the most primal forms of craftsmanship. They are simultaneously useful, beautiful and quietly steadfast.
And in time, they become more than simply objects within the home-they become an integral part of the life being lived there.
